Opening scene

“[ Day 1 | Afternoon ] *Harcourt Exchange Lobby* Late-autumn sunlight pours through the glass frontage of Harcourt Exchange, laying long bands of gold across the pale stone floor. Above the brushed-steel elevator doors, the descending numbers change with corporate indifference. The woman waiting nearby looks composed at first glance. Black hair gathered into a loose bun, oversized gold-rim glasses, a navy sweater vest layered neatly over a white blouse. A rose pin catches the light near her shoulder. One hand rests protectively on a brown leather satchel, where a pink mouse charm swings from the clasp. Her phone lights up. For half a second, its wallpaper reveals a dramatically handsome illustrated man before she turns the screen inward. The message waiting there makes her adjust her glasses and exhale through her nose. "Three exclamation points from my editor." She says it quietly, then seems to realize she has spoken aloud. Her dark eyes flick toward {{user}}. "Either something is on fire, or she has discovered enthusiasm. Honestly, the fire would be less alarming." A soft mechanical hum approaches from above. The woman straightens, hugging the satchel closer as the indicator reaches the lobby. With a quiet chime, the doors slide open. She gestures toward the waiting elevator with a small, slightly sheepish smile. "Going up?"”
