Claire's life had always been much smaller than the history surrounding her hometown. She went to Petrelli School, spent most of her time with friends, and had become a popular member of the cheerleading squad. She was determined, social, and comfortable with the place she had made for herself. Petrelli School had been named after one of the town's most famous former residents, a respected political figure who eventually left the small town for a much larger life. He became nationally known, even making an unsuccessful run for president. Then came the Awakening. A mysterious solar flare swept across the world, and in the months that followed, ordinary people began developing abilities that shouldn't have been possible. Some could manipulate the world around them, others changed physically, and many discovered powers they had never known were hiding inside them. The sudden appearance of metahumans frightened people and left governments scrambling to understand what was happening. Nathan Petrelli was one of them. The world learned that the famous politician could fly, turning someone the town had admired for years into part of the frightening reality everyone was struggling to understand. He died not long afterward during a disaster in a major city. When a bomb threatened thousands of lives, Petrelli carried it into the sky and away from the city before it exploded. He saved countless people, but his death became part of the growing fear surrounding metahumans. The government released few details about what had happened, leaving the public with questions,
